New House Country Hotel on the outskirts of Cardiff is one such find. We visited just before the drawbridge came up and it's a place I hope to go back to many times.
This Grade II listed property is set in well maintained grounds, with lush lawns, mature trees and flowering plants aplenty. The views from the front of the house sweep across Cardiff and to a familiar eye, it's a magical scene. Whether you're watching the lolloping sheep in the field below, the wagtails taking a dip in the elegant fountain or you're taking a closer look at the Millennium stadium through the telescope, there's much to occupy anyone without reaching for your phone.

The main house was originally built by a wealthy Welsh industrialist, Thomas Lewis in the 1730s, and there are still many attractive Georgian features. In the living room was a concealed door, covered in wallpaper and in the dining area were the great panelled shutters tucked into the sides of the tall sashed windows.
Outside the front was ample well-distanced seating for us to take in the view while enjoying the late September sun.
There was no rush over our cream tea and self-distanced meet up with loved ones before who knows when we will meet again.
The service could not have been more helpful or friendly and our evening meal offered a perfect selection of choices that suited everyone. The standout was definitely the banana, butterscotch and waffle dessert.
The New House Country Hotel describes itself as an oasis, just outside Cardiff and I'd say that's a very apt description.
If you're making a trip to Cardiff, or South Wales, this would be a very good option. My Welsh One and I gave it a five out of five and fingers crossed it makes it to the other side of the difficult times ahead.
This is not a sponsored post, we stayed two nights in a standard double.
