Last week I had the very exciting and truly delightful (sorry for gushing) opportunity to find out more about Hotel Chocolat and in particular their Easter 2015 range.
Meeting them at their cafe in Kensington I opted straight away for a classic hot chocolate to try and it came presented in a cute white cup on a small wooden tray. The hot chocolate was rich and creamy and I'd barely started drinking it when I met Alex who offered to take me on my very own guided tour of their Easter range.
We're all about more cocoa less sugar, he said High street chocolates use more sugar because it's cheaper whereas we use 2- 3x more cocoa instead.
We're also more ethical than fair trade, not only do we pay the cocoa farmers a fair rate but we're finding ways to ensure their farming methods are sustainable in the long run.
This is definitely good to know as was seeing all the fun and quirky ways Hotel Chocolat have come up with around the theme of Easter eggs.
This year there are chocolate lollies on sticks that looked like Egg on Toast, Egg Sandwiches in sandwich-style packaging, Eggs and Soldiers or the cute-tastic Egg on my Face.
I must admit I wasn't sure about the egg sandwich idea but after tasting it I can heartily recommend it as the chocolate tastes divine. I tried the milk chocolate with caramel crunch and am kicking myself for sharing it. It really is too good to share.
Their range also includes more traditional eggs all presented in beautiful boxes and containing chocolates inside. Just superb.
One egg in particular Hotel Chocolat are particularly excited about is their milk-free milk chocolate scrambled egg, which has taken two years to perfect and is made using 65 percent almond powder instead of dairy. A perfect choice for vegans and lactose intolerant who want a mellower flavour than you get with the dark.
As a mere novice to Hot Chocolat's world of chocolate, Alex also showed me their range of chocolates that are made specifically from cocoa produced in just one region and gave me ones from Peru, Madagascar and Venezuala to try.
Each country's chocolate has its own distinct flavour, which is described on the packaging in poetic terms such as a flourish of raspberries and cherries and a whisper of coffee.
This gave me the idea of doing a blind taste test for the family to find out just how good my foodie family's taste buds really are.
It turns out, not that great after all. Even after a steward's enquiry the results were, to say the least, the very least. Disappointing.
Never mind. Hotel Chocolat gave me an amazing goodie bag, are really very nice and will be sending one of their amazing Easter Eggs in the post to one lucky winner.
