Discover Kemptown, Brighton: Outdoor activities in winter

Next up in this series of blog posts about Kemptown, Brighton are some suggestions for outdoor activities to try out. To accompany this post are two other posts that cover Food and Booze, and also Coffee and Cake.

Kemptown seafront1. Open-Air Pool: Kemptown's 50-metre open-air pool at Sea Lanes, has now opened. It's the National Open Water Swimming Centre on the beach. Bring your swimmers for a brisk dip in a pool where they aim to keep the temperature at 19 degrees. Book your spot via their app for £11 an hour.

2. Yellowave Volleyball: Another active option is available next door at Yellowave Beach Sports Venue & Beach Café. This ray of sunshine has been open since 2007 and hasn't lost any of its heart. As you enter the decked area, you'll instantly feel like you're on holiday, even if it's just for a quick glass of wine with a friend. Make sure you book in advance for a beach volleyball session on their soft, fine sand courts.

3. Pitch and Putt: For an impromptu activity, there's also the recently refurbished pitch and putt at Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf. It's always buzzing, and the friendly staff will make you feel very welcome.

4. Hire a bike: If the weather is fine, then make the most of it by renting a Beryl BTN Bike (60% are e-bikes). You can buy a two-day pass for £12, with 100 minutes allocation. There are 120 pedal bikes and 275 electric bikes in Brighton and Hove and nine cycle hubs within Kemptown. Start a scenic journey along the seafront from one of two locations on Madeira Drive or the one in the marina, and head east along the Undercliff Walk towards Saltdean and be dazzled by the Sussex white chalk cliffs reflecting the sunlight.

Address: Beryl Bikes BTN Brighton Marina, Brighton Marina, Brighton BN2 5WE
Opening Hours: anytime

5. Artist Open Houses: a winter guide would not be complete without mentioning the unique experience of the winter Artists Open Houses. Not only do you get to take a look inside some beautifully curated homes but you get a chance to discover new artists, buy unique Christmas presents, support the local economy and have a thoroughly good day out (there is often tea and cake involved). Expect to find crocheted food plates, sewn creatures, mouth-blown glass, Fungi sculptures, Mexican influenced clay whistles, alongside jewellery, ceramics, painting, photography, printmaking and there's always some greeting cards by artists too. There are about 8 houses to visit, in and around Kemptown and you can find full details on the AOH website below.
