Brighton Shop Heroes - Vintage in Kemptown Village

Remember Bagpuss? A pink and white old saggy cloth-cat. Each episode would begin with the lines

Once upon a time. Not so long ago, there was a little girl and her name was Emily.

Her shop was full of things that somebody had once lost and Emily had found and brought home to Bagpuss.
Emily's cat Bagpuss, the most important, the most beautiful, the most magical, saggy old cloth cat in the whole wide world.

Each item had a story to tell and that's what reminded me of The Vintage Workshop. Ever since this vintage shop opened three years ago I've been attracted by the clothes hanging up over the door and its bits and bobs in the window.

Located in the heart of Kemptown Village, the shop is owned by Lucia Elliston, who sub lets some of the space to other collectors and specialist makers.

In the back are men's and women's vintage clothing, where you'll find the odd Biba original nestled in amongst waistcoats, hats and blankets. They also sell some vintage inspired hand-made items such as aprons and blanket holders.

To the front of the shop when I visited were a pile of prints stacked up, a basket of goose eggs on a table and pretty pictures on the wall, to name a few items.

On a shelf were stacked some old books and on another a memory of ebony elephants clustered together. Underneath a sign read "Stands for Good Luck, Wisdom and Serenity".

Rachel Frey, one of the collectors with a concern in the shop was on hand when I dropped by and I mentioned that I had often stopped to look at their window displays. It turns out I'm not the only one to have admired them, they've also won two awards, one from Brighton and Hove and the other from Vintage Brighton.

Everywhere there is something new to look at. Pieces with character. Once owned by someone else, they've been gathered together at The Vintage Workshop and now they sit waiting for the next person to catch their eye.
