Notes from New York

I believe in synchronicity and in fact the more it happens, the stronger it reinforces the notion that if you are going with the flow of your life there will be funny coincidences and clues along the way to let you know that you're on the right track.

The most recent example of this for me involves New York, the iconic image of workmen taking lunch over Manhattan and an unexpected trip up the Rock. If this synchronicity lark is a whole new concept then this coincidence may seem tenuous. The best advice I can give you is to read The Celestine Prophecy or listen to Leveraging the Universe, something like that.

Anyway, that’s all a by the bye for the moment, these notes from New York are an opportunity to share with you some of the cultural differences I noticed while I was out there. From public signs, door numbering, trollies for doggies and a cat sat on a hat, it’s all New York baby.

Below are a couple of signs I noticed:

Another custom I picked up on that may be very common but was new to me was that of displaying plates of food outside a restaurant so that people could see what they could expect to be served.  I passed dishes of spaghetti and other main dishes before I realised this appeared to be quite a popular custom and one worth recording.  However, after that point the only example I found to capture was of a (not) hot chocolate and pastry.  I don't think you get served by penguins at this establishment, that part's just misleading.

I'll finish with a couple of pieces of wall art old and new, which as anyone who has dipped into this blog before may have picked up I love taking pictures of the wall art around Brighton, so it is only fitting that I bring you a couple of examples from the Great city of New York.

Now back to what I was saying about synchronicity and that - one day I'm hanging up the iconic picture of  workmen taking lunch over Manhattan, then not long after I'm recreating the scene with my sister-in-law on a mock up beam with the same background before heading up the top of the Rock in a willy wonka style lift to experience the real Manhattan skyline from the Rockefeller Center  for myself.
